The Mayor’s Chain

Roger Kemble, Church Street

Roger Kemble, born in 1721, was manager of the ‘Provincial Strolling Company’, and a grand-nephew of Father John Kemble, who was martyred on Widemarsh Common in 1679.

His twelve-strong family included...the eldest, Sarah (Siddons), who was the most famous, being an actress of tragedy and a singer whose ‘grace, stature and unblemished reputation’ evoked goodwill and affection from those who saw her. John Phillip Kemble excelled when performing the plays of ancient Greece and Rome, being a muscular ‘classical’ looking man. Fanny Kemble was one of the best Shakesperian readers of her time.
