The Mayor’s Chain
Hereford City Council emerged from Hereford Corporation and was made a District Council in the 1974 reorganisation of Local Government. It subsequently merged with other District Councils in Herefordshire to become The County of Herefordshire District Council, a unitary authority, in the 1998 reorganisation of Local Government; At this point the City was left with a body known as The City of Hereford Charter Trustees having responsibilities for the care of the Mayoralty and the City Charters and Plate. on 1st April 2000 the City was ‘Parished’ and became Hereford Town Council; This was followed by the Queen reinstating Hereford with its City Status and the parish council adopted the resurrected title of Hereford City Council once again.
